The Scherzo has a some rhythmic anxiouisness due to a few judicious 8th notes and syncopations via sforzandi and ties. It is well-sprinkled with canonic imitation. The brisk trio with 8th note values against the dotted half note 1-to-a-bar accompaniment gives this the sort of 6/8 Italiante pulse and feel of the 4th movement (especially minor strains of the development): a foreshadowing or simply linkage across movements. The graceful dovetail from trio back to scherzo knits them nicely together. Notice that the Trio is truncated: the second reprise is not repeated. Instead, there is an "early" return to the Scherzo.
