steelpan, steel pan, pan, steel drum
—pitched, percussion instrument from Trinidad and Tobago originating from discarded 55 gallon industrial drums. Played with mallets or sticks, the player is called a pannist. Familiarly associated with Caribbean Calypso music, it has evolved into a family / consort of instruments creating large orchestras as well as a vehicle for the virtuoso soloist. Its highly distinctive timbre with full chromatic pitch (and a variety of percussive sounds) offers a fresh color to the musical palette. wikipedia
